Glen Tanar

The bridge over the Tanar
Glen Tanar features a beautiful bridge and St Lesmo's Chapel

Starting point:
Distance:  long (6.2 miles / 10 km)
Climb: 200m, path climbs quite steeply at points.
Difficulty: medium
Underfoot: generally on good paths, some minor footpaths.
Estimated time to complete: 2.5 hours
Scenic value: 9/10

Comments: When Queen Victoria bought Balmoral Castle, she and her husband began a practice of commissioning cairns to mark important events, usually the marriage of their children. When Victoria's husband Albert died, she commissioned a huge, impressive memorial for him on top of one of the hills on the estate, in the shape of a pyramid.

This walk takes in most of these cairns in what is still a manageable route even for someone who doesn't normally do any hillwalking. It also starts at a good carpark, includes a great view of Balmoral Castle, and features a great cafe near the end.
